Are turtle releases ethical? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿข They can be Are turtle releases ethical? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿข

They can be!! But, they also might not be....

Turtle hatchlings need to scramble to the water as quickly and as naturally as possible. This gives them the best chance to swim across the reef, into open ocean where fewer predators threaten a tasty little morsel like a teeny baby turtle.

The longer a turtle is held in captivity, the more it exhausts itself, the longer they are held, the less natural instincts they have. And they need this to effectively escape the risky reef to freedom.

Because of this we have no 'scheduled releases'. They are held with little notice and at antisocial hours (unless you are an early riser!) because they are fewer predators on the reef at dawn and dusk, than there are in the intense heat and boat traffic in the middle of day.

Make sure you do your own research and ask questions if you wish to partake in a turtle release. Is the event prioritising the turtles health and safety? Or to entertain the tourists that have come to watch?

We are here to educate as many visitors who come to the Gilis as possible, and to safeguard the baby turtles that hatch here to create a safe path to freedom in the ocean.

Got a question? Ask us! ๐Ÿ‘‡

We've rescued over 5,000 baby turtles with your he We've rescued over 5,000 baby turtles with your help!

The Proyek Penyu rangers have had an incredible and busy season. We are grateful for the thousands (literally) of tourists that have been lucky enough to join one of our ad-hoc immediate releases, making sure we can educate and inspire tourists, whilst making sure the hatchlings are safe, each turtle having around 2,000 photos taken of their run to the ocean ๐Ÿ˜†

While our conservation and outreach activities are expanding and gaining traction fast, the increasing pressures from coastal development, erosion, and habitat degradation have pushed our team and resources to the limit.

We are proud of what weโ€™ve achieved with so little, but we need more space, more support, and more awareness to continue protecting Giliโ€™s turtles into the future.

We welcome partnerships, donations, and collaborations from those who care about ethical tourism, endangered species protection, and grassroots conservation to help us further our progress to protect baby turtles and educate the local community!

Please read our impact report over on Global Giving, and if you can donate to protect more turtle nests, we'd be e-turtely grateful!

They can sleep underwater for up to seven hours!? They can sleep underwater for up to seven hours!? But how do they do it? ๐Ÿ˜ด

The answer is going slooowww and steady. ๐Ÿข

By slowing down their heartrate, they can conserve oxygen and stay down there for a long time! ๐Ÿซ€
But I thought we were keeping them safe? ๐Ÿค” Unf But I thought we were keeping them safe? ๐Ÿค”

Unfortunately, that isn't the case!

๐Ÿข Keeping them in a tank would cause them to be confused and make them unable to learn their home beach.
๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Living in such shallow tanks means hatchlings have under-developed lungs, not learning how to hold their breath and forage for food.
๐Ÿ’ฆ Swimming around in circles in a tank can easily tire out hatchlings, and unlike the ocean, these tanks don't tend to have any food for them to refuel. Usually, by the time they return to the ocean, they are much too weak to survive.
๐Ÿ˜ฐ Headstarted hatchlings don't know they need to find food. It's always dropped from the sky.
๐Ÿ‘ŠHatchlings are solitary creatures from birth. Holding lots of territorial wildlife together creates injuries and infections in the tank.

๐Ÿ‘ When possible, turtles should be released into the ocean immediately after hatching, the more natural, the better the chance of survival. ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’š

Recycling is one of the most important things we c Recycling is one of the most important things we could do to help to environment. However, it's not as easy as it might seem!

Keeping trash away from our landfills and oceans is just one of the ways you could help protect our beloved sea turtles. Unfortunately, due to contamination and wrongly sorted iterms, only a bit of plastic trash actually gets recycled. Which means the rest end up in the exact places we try to avoid.

Remember, protecting our turtle friends starts from home! ๐Ÿ

A little late, been busy on the beach and helping little flippers under the sand!

Thank you for following and supporting our journey to protect every Gili T turtle nest to help safeguard the critical journey to the ocean naturally.
Each month has been unprecedented with the amount of nests laid, hatching, and unseasonal weather events. We are tackling every problem we encounter, and learning a lot about these nesting habits every day!

Turtle Rangers doing what turtle rangers do best!! Turtle Rangers doing what turtle rangers do best!! ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ‘ธ

Shortly after a nest hatches naturally, our rangers will carefully excavate the nest.

This is primarily to assess the hatching success rate: count and compare the hatchlings that emerge vs. the amount of empty, broken, or unhatched eggs found inside the nest.

More recently, it has become paramount to excavate the nests almost immediately after the natural hatch due to the high tides and unseasonal rains that have compacted the sand and drowned several nests.

The rangers have found healthy, tired hatchlings that couldn't dig through the crusty sand layer formed after the surface layer has dried after a high tide.

Almost all excavations recently have resulted in a few extra hatchlings offered a very lucky extra chance at survival and freedom where naturally they would have perished in the nest.

Every little chance to help whilst ensuring that the conditions are as natural as possible are welcome!

A healthy coral reef and a yummy meal sounds like A healthy coral reef and a yummy meal sounds like a win-win for sure! ๐Ÿฅฌ๐Ÿข

Turtles are basically like the ocean's very own gardeners, as they can manage algae and seagrass growth. While these two are also very important to the environment, too much can lead to the loss of coral! ๐Ÿฅฒ๐Ÿชธ

โ“why? because they could cover up the coral and cause them to get insufficient light for photosynthesis
We are Eturtley grateful to our supporters! ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

Today, we hit 2,000 followers!

Extending a huge thank you to everyone who has learnt about ethical turtle conservation with Proyek Penyu through our free Bahasa workshops, social media, our tracking talks, and releases. We are determined to raise awareness with as many people who pass through Gili Trawangan about proper protocols for turtle conservation, and we are glad you are here!

This wouldn't be possible without the incredible work of our turtle rangers, who are working tirelessly day and night in the busiest nesting season we've witnessed so far. When do they sleep?! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿฅฑ๐Ÿ˜

Being an all-female local team of rangers isn't the easiest.
Still, these warm smiles, expert knowledge, and unhealthy obsession with baby turtle hatchlings are certainly paying off, now that over 4,400 hatchlings have been released naturally in 2025. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ

Ever wondered why they were called green sea turtl Ever wondered why they were called green sea turtles? Surprisingly, it's not because of the color of their shell! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

We used to think it was "false advertising" for sure! ๐Ÿ˜†

But it's true. Due to a build-up of pigments (chlorophyll) in their bodies, they really do have green fat. Wonder how people found that out! ๐Ÿข
